Have you ever heard the term, “less is more?”

Well when it comes to smart and effortless traveling, less is more when it comes to packing your suitcase. Yes, you want to be prepared for any weather or situation, but that doesn’t mean packing your whole life away in suitcases. So, here are some simple steps when it comes to what to pack for traveling. And this way only includes bringing a carry-on suitcase, so you don’t have to pay the expensive fee for a checked bag.

  1. You want to pick the right carry-on bag

Size limitations vary from flight carrier to carrier, so when it comes to finding the right size, double-check with your flight carrier first. Be aware of a chunky suitcase, however, because that can end up taking up a lot more space than what you have inside of it. Rolling small suitcases are more durable and cause less strain on your body. Small rolling suitcases are also perfect for keeping things tidy and organized.

  1. Take advantage of the airline’s purse or backpack allowance

Most airlines allow you to take a smaller, more personal item on board along with your carry-on suitcase. This can include a purse or backpack that can fit under the seat in front of you. I wouldn’t suggest using a purse though. I would bring some type of a small backpack so you are able to fit more items inside of it.

  1. Pack enough clothes for a week

You can always do laundry while on your travels. Unless you are unable to use a washer and dryer, you can always use soap and a sink. Clothes can be easily air-dried, but a week’s worth of clothes should be at the top of your list.

  1. Bring clothes that can be layered, rather than one big jacket

If you are going to a destination that will be cold and cloudy, I highly recommend packing clothes that can be layered. This is better than packing even just one big jacket because those types of jackets can take up a lot more space than four long sleeves.

  1. Choose the right toiletries

Don’t pack any toiletries that don’t fall into the TSA liquid limit. You can always buy more toiletries for the destination you are headed to, so just pack the more essential ones like your toothbrush, toothpaste, face wash, etc. I would save buying shampoo and conditioner until I arrive at your destination because most hotels already provide that for you.

  1. Choose the right footwear

Footwear is the thing that always takes up the most space. I would wear your biggest set of footwear on you while you are in transit. Pack the lightest and smallest footwear so you have more room in your suitcase for other essential things.

  1. Roll your clothes instead of fold

This step will be worth the extra time so you can be tidy and fit a lot into your suitcase. Instead of folding all of your luggage, simply roll it. I know this sounds counter-intuitive, but trust me. When you roll clothes instead of folding them, it takes up a lot less space.

  1. Wear what you can while in transit

Whatever is on your body does not count towards the airline’s weight limit, so wear as much as possible or comfortably during your flight. This step is especially handy when you’re traveling somewhere with a cooler climate.

If you follow these simple eight steps for packing a carry-on suitcase, you will definitely have enough room to fit all that you need and maybe even some more. Go ahead and save that extra baggage fee on a gift for a loved one from your travels.
