I’d like to consider myself an avid traveler. So far, I have been to 14 countries and almost every state in America. I have been to
- Canada
- Mexico
- Puerto Rico
- The Bahamas
- Costa Rica
- Germany
- Poland
- Slovenia
- Hungary
- Austria
- the Czech Republic
- Spain
- Portugal
- and Fiji
I have been to every state besides Alaska and Hawaii, which I hope to visit soon. I have been to many places and have had many adventures. But here is quite possibly the most embarrassing moment that has happened to me while on my travels.
- Getting A Close Look at My Tour Guide
When I was a junior in high school, only 16 years old, my school decided to take a group of students to six countries in Europe – Germany, Poland, Slovenia, Hungary, Austria, and the Czech Republic. This was and still is one of the best weeks of my life.
The fifth place we stayed at was Budapest, Hungary. So many amazing memories happened here. My friends and I got lost wandering around the city, we went on a private boat ride at night down the Danube River and swam in the thermal baths while it was snowing outside. Budapest is such a beautiful city that everyone should visit.
Well, the first night we stayed in Budapest, I got into a little mix-up with the hotel rooms, front desk staff, and our tour guide…
My roommate and I were hanging out with some friends in someone else’s hotel room. I was in charge of keeping the key card for our room because my roommate and I were going to be together all night anyways. However, I ended up losing the key card. Which is fine! “Just get a new card from the front desk,” right? Well, neither my roommate nor I could remember what room we were in. So, I’m trying my best to remember what room we were supposed to be staying in. I was walking up and down the hallways, in hopes of some number sparking my memory. I finally came upon a room that looked somewhat familiar, so I went down to the front desk clerk and asked for a key to that room.
Once I went back up to that room and unlocked it, I came upon my school’s tour guide, laying on his bed, reading a book, in only his underwear. I took one step into the room and immediately froze in shock. We both didn’t know what to do but just stare at each other for what seemed like 2 minutes. We both just stammered our words before I swiftly turned around and made my way out of there as fast as I could. At this point, I had no idea where my roommate was, so I’m kind of upset I had to experience ‘that’ alone, but oh well. It’s funny looking back now.
Somehow, we finally found our room again and all was good. The hotel staff was just a little mad at us because we asked for a new key card about three different times.
The next morning was obviously very awkward and neither one of us knew what to say to one other. I’m pretty sure we just ignored what happened and went about our day.
Even though what happened to me was so embarrassing, I took away a big lesson. ALWAYS remember what hotel room you’re in and NEVER lose your keys.
