Building a tent is a trick that either someone knows how to do, thinks they know how to do but doesn’t, or someone who has no clue where to start. If you’re a first-time camper or backpacker there are different kinds of tents recommended for the specific trip you’re after. If you’re backpacking, I suggest bringing a light and compact tent so you can hike easily. If you’re planning on going on a family camping trip where you have to drive to, bring a sturdy and spacious one. Also when you’re out buying your tent, make sure you have all the materials needed for the job.
Tools required:
- Rubber Mallet
Or…
- Big enough rock to pin down the stakes.
Materials Required:
- Stakes
- Poles
- Tarp
- Tent
Step 1:
You lay the base here.
- Gather all your materials
- Stakes
- Poles
- Tent
- Tarp
- Mallet or Rock
- Choose a clear, flat, and level spot to set up your tent.
- Decide which way you want to orient your tent and want the entrance to be.
- Lay down your tarp (it’s ok if your tarp is wider or longer than your tent).
Step 2:
This is where you spread out and stake your tent.
- With another person’s help, spread out the tent and stretch it.
- Drive the stakes into the ground through the hoops on every corner.
Steps 3 and 4 are usually the most challenging for people, so read carefully here.
Steps 3:
Here you add the poles.
- Take the poles and unfold them (they are all connected by a bungee cord).
- You can easily click the poles altogether.
- Insert the longest or main poles into the sleeves on the outside of the tent (slide them carefully).
- Then, repeat with any additional poles.
Step 4:
You are going to raise the tent here.
- You will elevate the tent by slowly raising one of the longest poles.
- Snap the end of the poles into a pocket or fastener on the exterior of the tent near the ground (do this for all the poles).
- Repeat this with additional poles.
- Secure all the clips alongside the poles that secure them to the outside of your tent.
Step 5:
Now, you’re going to add the rainfly.
- All you’re going to do is drape the rainfly over your tent.
- Look for fasteners to hold the rainfly in place (these will be by the base of the main support poles).
Step 6:
Finally, add the remaining stakes and supports.
- Stake any remaining edges of your tent.
- Secure any ropes that may need staking.
Now, you have yourself a tent! It’s all about choosing the right tent for the right camping trip. Yet, once you get these six simple steps down, it will become as easy as riding a bike.
